Skerrow and Stroan are owned by New Galloway Community Enterprises Ltd (NGCE), a Community Benefit Society with some 260 shareholders. Most of the shareholders live locally and others have connections with New Galloway of one kind or another.
NGCE was formed in 2015 to save New Galloway's last shop from closing. Much hard work and good will from the local community with support from the Plunkett Foundation and other organisations led to an award in 2017 from the Big Lottery's 'Growing Community Assets' fund to purchase and renovate the shop and convert the attached house into two self-catering flats.
The building was purchased in July 2017 and after a spell in temporary accommodation we moved into the refurbished shop in August 2018. The flats were completed and rentals commenced in 2019.
As well as running the shop and self-catering accommodation, NGCE employs a Community Engagement Worker to foster the social and economic well-being of the community. You will find more information on the activities she promotes on the shop noticeboards.
